Although waggonway development occured first in the midlands the first waggonway in the North East was an early one built in 1608. Development was extensive with the heyday of the horse operated, wooden railled waggonway occuring during the eighteenth century. Horse and steam waggonways overlapped but steam ultimately prevailed. This compliments their operational Pockerley steam waggonway which covers the early nineteenth century period. The stone building in the background to some of the images in this set is the steam shed. Whether or not this was an intentional aim it does mean the currently dead state of the waggonway (As at my visit in Sep 2009) suggests abandonment due to the coming of the steam era!! Horse gins were used to raise and lower men and materials down the pit shafts and to raise the coal in filled corves for onward transport. Open truck Pony/pack horse trods pre-dated waggonways. Usually an annual event this was my first visit. This is a selection from the photo's taken on the day showing the locomotives on display plus some of the other rolling stock that was in the yard. The track would need some fettling before being used again. Interesting mixed use line with tripper runs in the summer and lavender harvesting in the autumn. Posted pictures cover stock and setting to provide ideas for using this this line as basis for a micro' layout. Would I go again? If the railway was running yes. However I had also visited the Lavender Farm nearby at Terrington the day before as my mother was searching for garden plants, and for just a visit as a day out the Terrrington site wins hands down. The construction starting point, three printed sheets plus an old Tri-ang Weltrol wagon for the underframe. The sheets created from NGRS drawings of the original. Close up 1 close up 2 Building starts 1 Building starts 2 Lesson now remembered, colour the card back before cutting the window holes First glazing added but forgot to paint card edges before fitting the glazing showing problems of Trial fit to chassis, starting to add the inner panelling View over buffers on trial fit to chassis Balsa wood framing added to underside Seat bottom in, additional framing commenced and seat back about to go in. First seat completed second side commenced. Note revised method with extra packing for seat bases. Seat bases must go on before fixing the side! Both sides now attached to floor base Second seat bases have the packing exras Side framing completed. Note the white side out proved easier to Both seats in and main framing complete. Noted need for extra roof former and a centre support beam and some cheats to add triangular support into the end vestibules Sir's umbrella and boot stand (extra bracing for the sides) Extra roof former at centre of saloon where one would have been Wire hand rails folded up from a coat hanger and Araldited on, plus roof First layer of card View of roof timbering and wire support at one end Other end view A composite view of the first build as at 30 Nov. The following photo sequence forms a Three quarter view of completed first build. The end veranda rails were printed on to ink jet transparency film. So that's how I did it warts and all!
